Why work with a health or life coach?
In this series, Holistic Health Coach and HollyWell founder + CEO Holly Rapport tackles your most pressing questions—while candidly sharing her own journey through the career climb, burnout, love gained and lost, and coming back to her best self.
When I talk to women about the holistic coaching and consulting I do through HollyWell, whether we’re messaging on LinkedIn or chatting over a produce bin at the grocery store, this is often the first question I get asked:
What is a holistic health and wellness coach… and why would I need one?
As women, it’s easy to get lost in the societal pressures that tell us we’re not enough. We’re not smart enough. We’re not productive enough. We’re not pretty or thin enough. Etc, etc, etc. Us single, childfree (or childless) women, in particular, can feel left out and completely “othered” by this pressure.
Eventually, this barrage of external standards can lead to bitter burnout, a disconnection from yourself, and a total loss of fulfillment. I’ve felt it myself, and if you’re reading this, I have a feeling you’re feeling it too.
That’s where a holistic coach, who’s trained in many aspects of wellbeing, comes in.
A holistic health and wellness coach helps you look to yourself—rather than the world around you—for wholeness, purpose, and sweetly satisfying joy.
I get it—there are a million and one types of coaches in the world, each with their own focus, specialty, and (hopefully!) credentials. When you’re looking for a little extra support, finding the right coach can feel overwhelming.
While a traditional counselor may only support your mental health, a life coach may focus on helping you build better habits and a stronger mindset, and a health coach may only support your fitness and nutrition, a holistic health and wellness coach combines multiple physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional tools into a total-life transformation program.
What are the key aspects to consider when looking for a holistic health and wellness coach?
Some holistic health coaches have a background in counseling or psychology. Some are more heavily focused on exercise and nutrition. And some have no credentials beyond life experience.
I can’t speak to other holistic health programs. But I can share my own experience and qualifications.
The HollyWell Method I use in my coaching program is based on my:
Master’s in Public Health (with an emphasis in behavioral science and health education)
Health coaching certification
Reiki and intuitive energy healing training
200 hours of Yoga Teacher Training
Human-centered design certificate
32 years of industry, nonprofit, coaching, and consulting experience
And when I work with coaching clients, I leverage all of these tools to build a robust, personalized 90-day program.
Lastly, and most importantly, schedule a discovery call with your potential coach before you join their program.
A discovery call is a great way to see if the holistic health and wellness coach you’re considering is the right fit for your lifestyle, goals, and personality.
Ask yourself: Do I feel comfortable talking with this person? Do I feel like I can trust them? Do they understand me?
I can’t emphasize enough how important this connection is when it comes to coaching. Before you make your final decision, listen to your feelings, then make the best choice for you.
In short: A well-trained holistic health coach goes deeper, studies harder, and uses more tools (including their lived experience!) to align every area of life, so you can enjoy more of it.
